2 1/2 c. sifted flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
3/4 c. butter, softened
1 c. brown sugar, packed
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/2 squares baking chocolate, melted
1/4 tsp. baking soda
chocolate chips
cashew nuts
Sift together the flour, baking powder and salt. Cream the butter; gradually beat in the brown sugar.
When well blended, beat in the egg and vanilla. Gradually blend in the flour mixture. Combine the cooled chocolate
and the baking soda. Add the chocolate mixture to 1/3 of the dough; chill. Roll out 1/2 of the light dough into
a 10 x 4-inch strip. Shape 1/2 of the chocolate (dark) dough into a roll 10 inches long. Place the dark strip
on the light strip; mold the sides of the light strip around the dark, wrap in foil and chill for at least 2 hours.
Repeat with the remaining dough. Cut the chilled dough into slices about 1/8 to 1/4-inch thick and put 2 slices together
to resemble an owl's head. Pinch a corner at the top of each slice to resemble ears. Put a chocolate chip in each
circle to form eyes and press a whole cashew between the two slices for a beak. Bake on a greased baking sheet at 350
degrees for 8 to 12 minutes. Remove immediately. Makes about 4 dozen.
